Great advice! I also recommend this to new engineers who ask how to gain experience: start an open-source project or contribute to one that you use in your work.
I started a Swift open-source project about 8 years ago while I was developing mobile apps to solve the boring task of form validation. Soon after, I changed my role in the organization, but I decided to maintain the project to keep my skills up-to-date and to add it to my resume (you know, just in case).
